  • Uncovering the Beauty within Wood.

    broken image

My name is Ian and I am an Englishman living close to the Arctic Circle in Northern Finland. I've lived here for almost 20 years and live here with my wife, 3 kids, 8 dogs and some chickens!

I got my first knife as a child and I have fond memories of summer holidays sitting in the sun, carving up pieces of wood trying to make something recognisable. More often than not, the result would be a pile of wood shavings by my feet, but I had fun!

Thankfully I have developed my skills since then, but the joy of losing myself in a woodwork project remains the same. I started this page as a way of exploring my woodworking and pushing myself forward to learn new skills and techniques.

Products are available to buy on this site. Please also feel free to contact me if you would like anything a little more specific to your own needs. This could be a personal gift with a personal touch or corporate gifts that show your customers how much you value them.

  • Wood Varieties

Since I make everything to order, it isn't practical to show every product, in every wood variety in the shop. So I have created a section here where you can see an example of every wood that I have so far, and when you see those, you can choose from the drop down menu for each product. Obviously if I make a specific product in a certain wood, I will post a picture.

    Birch

    Birch

Living in Finland, the winters can be cold and we have a large wood burning oven in our kitchen which heats the whole house in the winter. One of the most efficient woods for burning is Birch and it keeps the oven warm for several days afterwards. I have a whole shed full of nice dry Birch just ready to be saved from the fire! It is a soft wood that turns nicely and is very light in colour when finished. If you get lucky there may be some interesting patterns to be found!

    Oak

    Oak

This is my most plentiful wood. A few years ago, a friend asked me if I wanted a quantity of Oak that his school was looking to get rid of. I agreed and a few days later, I came home and found a my garden full of about 10 huge planks of wood. 5cm thick, 50cm wide and several metres long! When I made the first pen, I was amazed at how beautiful the grain is. It flows in different directions and looks amazing when polished to a shine.
